I remember getting my first library card like it was yesterday. My first-grade class went on a field trip to the local library and when the librarian gave me my library card, she said that it would allow me to explore the world. I thought it was magical! I believed it to be a portal to faraway places and enchanted kingdoms. As I grew, so did my appetite for reading and learning.

If you don’t have a card, you can apply for one online or in person at your local library. There are so many things for families to do. Many things are free or have only a minimal cost to cover supplies. There is always something new and exciting at your local library.  You have access to books, magazines, games, movies, music, crafts, and so much more.

The library is a great place to learn about your family tree. The Champaign County Library shares some great online articles about genealogy and history. You can also access things like digital tax forms and links for free tax services. Maybe you are looking for a new hobby and want to give crochet a try.  Here is a link to a free kit in Greene County! If you do not have access to a computer or the Internet, you can reserve computer time for free at your local library. Libraries offer printing services for a small fee, and some also offer tutoring services.

Because of Covid-19, some libraries disinfect returned books, which may delay their return to the shelves. However, other changes made because of the pandemic have made it easier to get books. Some libraries offer drive up and call ahead services. If you do not have access to transportation, check out the bookmobile calendar to see if it will be in your area. Some libraries offer craft kits to go and dial in story time — perfect for your children when you need that precious 10 minutes to yourself! There are several apps you can download to gain free access to thousands of e-books, magazines, videos, and the latest music from the comfort of your own home.

I hope that you visit your local library to see all the exciting things it has to offer! If it has been a while since your last visit, please consider taking a trip there soon. Your new library card will quickly become your portal to magical places!
